Childcare Attendant Position Description

Title: Childcare Attendant

Overview

Redeemer Lutheran Church has established a staffed childcare room for the care and safety of children (infant-first grade) which is held during the late service on Sundays (10:45AM – 12:15PM) during the program year (September – May) and during our one service held on Sundays (9:45AM – 11:15AM) throughout the summer months (June – August.)

Position

The Childcare Attendant will be a non-exempt paid position.  The Childcare Attendant will be paid the current rate of $15 per hour. The Childcare Attendant is responsible for tending to the children, safety, cleanliness, and order in the childcare room.

Qualifications

The Childcare Attendant will be available to be in the childcare room on Sunday mornings unless otherwise discussed with the Pastor. This means that the Childcare Attendant will work with the Pastor to plan ahead when they may need to be away on a Sunday (vacation or activities) and let the Pastor know as soon as possible in the event that the Childcare Attendant becomes sick and is unable to be in the childcare room on Sunday mornings.

Employment is contingent upon successfully completing the Child Protection training, per Redeemer safety guidelines, and a background check.

Essential Job Functions

  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
  • Ability to read aloud to the children
  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress
  • Ability to routinely lift children and move furniture in the childcare room
  • Ability to play with the children as required, which may include laying on the floor, kneeling or squatting
  • Ability to clean toys, counters, and tabletops in the childcare room using wipes and other cleaning tools provided by Redeemer.
  • Ability to work effectively with Redeemer’s staff and Senior Childcare Attendant

Responsibilities

Safety

The Childcare Attendant(s) will work so that there will always be two people in the childcare room at all times, per Child Protection and church policy.  The Childcare Attendant will ensure that a child’s parent or guardian sign in and out of the childcare room for attendance.

The Childcare Attendant will not change diapers but will alert a child’s parent or guardian, if necessary.

Health

Childcare Attendants are expected to comply with Redeemer’s COVID protocols.

Cleanliness

Counters and tabletops should be wiped clean at the end of each session and toys and other items should stacked and stored in good order. Major spills or accidents should be reported to the custodian who is in the building on Sundays.

Toys should be cleaned as needed, but at least every other week.

Order

Expected behavior – Since there may be older children in the childcare room along with infants and toddlers, it is necessary to maintain order and a reasonable noise level. If problems arise with a particular child a parent or guardian will be asked to remove the child from the childcare room.

Other

Supplies – Report to the church office if something needs replenishing or replacing.

Reporting

The Childcare Attendant will report directly to the Pastor.

Policy Updates

Policies may occasionally be reviewed by the Pastor, and/or Council to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the Childcare room environment. When changes to policy have been made, the Childcare Attendant will be made aware of changes in a timely manner.
